Sensing and Machine Recognition of Affective Touch

Over the years, SPIN has invented several low-cost, flexible touch sensing systems and developed classification methods that allow us to sense and assess user's touch in realtime for the purpose of detecting emotional state and adapting an interaction. To date, these have primarly been developed in the context of touching social robots, but can be adapted for many other uses. Touch sensors range from the most obvious (sensitive patches mounted on a hard exoskeleton) to novel fur sensors and very low-cost fabric sensing.
