PACIFIC Discussion Group

Perception, Action, Cognition, & Interfaces, a Frenzy of Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Tuesday 4:00 FSC 1001 2424 Main Mall UBC

 ---
As users, inhabitants and  communicators in a technological society, we encounter increasingly complex cognitive and sensory-motor interactions with new devices and media in our environment. This interdisciplinary seminar series will promote  discussion between those who study human perception, cognition, and action, and designers of interactive technologies, media, and software.

From the "human sciences" side, we invite talks on the perceptual, cognitive, and performance characteristics of humans in rich sensory environments and the research methods and analyses that be used to better understand them. From the design side, we invite contributions of innovative research and technologies for advanced interactive systems.

 Areas of interest include:

 - human & machine sensorimotor systems
 - advanced / novel interactive systems
 - application of interaction techniques & theories into test cases
 - human perception, control & cognition
 - human performance
 - learning & adaptation
 - research methods related to above

Presentations will alternate between a discussion of a research topic of general interest (similar to a journal club) and technical/scientific presentations by researchers.  Examples are:

 - Presentation of new research, presented at a level and with sufficient background to be interesting and comprehensible to a broad audience, and with discussion encouraged. In particular we encourage presenters to show work-in-progress on which they desire input.

 - Open topical discussions moderated by a host who will present a brief overview, followed by an open discussion where perspectives from different fields are brought out.

 - Guest speakers in relevant disciplines

Room and time changes, speakers, titles and sometimes abstracts will be posted to the PACIFIC seminar mailing list.
